VLCT hosted a webinar on December 8, 2015, detailing the new legal requirements for Town and School Meeting Petitioned Articles, School Elections, and Formation of Union School Districts. The webinar was presented by the VLCT Municipal Assistance Center, Vermont Secretary of State, and the Vermont Schools Boards Association. The webinar focused on assisting Town and School Clerks with the following key areas:

  • The specific process and timeline that must be followed when a municipal clerk receives a voter-backed petition and the new requirements for voter-backed petitions,
  • A summary of the law governing formation of union school districts and the mechanics of multi-town unification votes, and
  • Requirements for election of school board members in towns holding unification votes, including director nomination petitions and the timing and content of warnings.
