August 10, 2020. The Census Bureau has announced that it will end its attempts to conduct in-person interviews on September 30 instead of October 31, 2020.
At this point, approximately four in 10 households in the United States – and in Vermont – have not responded to the 2020 Census. The shortened period for in-person interviews threatens to significantly undercount rural areas, communities of color, immigrants, and other hard-to-count populations.
In Vermont, the effects of an undercount might put at risk an estimated $1.5 trillion in federal spending over the next decade on programs including Medicare, Medicaid, and other public services.
