Act 153 of the 2020 legislative session requires Vermont to reduce greenhouse gas pollution to 26% below 2005 levels by 2025 and emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and to 80% by 2050. The act also provides for the Speaker of the House to appoint a member of the 23-person Climate Council to represent municipal governments. The council will consider opportunities for conservation through long-term carbon sequestration and identify actions Vermont communities can take to better prepare for more extreme weather events.
VLCT will recommend at least one currently serving local official to the Speaker in time for the new round of two-year appointments in October.
