The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has up to $92,000 available for diesel emissions reduction grants. The Vermont Diesel Emissions Reduction Financial Assistance Program provides technical assistance and incentive funding for projects that reduce emissions from diesel powered vehicles, engines, and non-road equipment. The application deadline is Monday, June 6, 2022. (This is the third request for proposals to award funds that remain since the request was first issued in November 2021.)

Funding is available for:

  • Replacement of diesel-powered heavy-duty vehicles, engines, and non-road equipment with electric (battery, grid, or fuel cell), alternative fuel, or newer diesel options,
  • Retrofitting with emission control technologies,
  • Engine replacements,
  • Clean alternative fuel conversions,
  • Installation of idle reduction technologies,
  • Aerodynamic technologies and low rolling resistance tires, and
  • Electrified parking spaces for transport refrigeration units and truck stop electrification projects.

Eligibility requirements apply; please refer to the Request for Proposals for more guidance.

Within the last 24 months, the financial assistance program grants have included:

  • $54,000 to a town to replace a 2000 Caterpillar 928 wheel loader with a 2022 Case 721G wheel loader, resulting in diesel emission reductions of 97% annually
  • $49,000 to a town to replace a 2006 International dump truck with a 2021 Western Star dump truck, resulting in diesel emission reductions of 91% annually
  • $47,000 to a town to replace a 2005 International dump truck with a 2020 Western Star dump truck, resulting in diesel emission reductions of 91% annually.

Please contact Jean Nicolai at (802) 585-4888 or jean.nicolai@vermont.gov with any questions. While the DEC is actively accepting applications, Jean will be the point of contact for this financial assistance opportunity. A Microsoft Teams meeting will be held May 23, 2022 to go over the application process and answer questions. All questions that Jean receives during the meeting and by email will be posted on the Vermont Business Assistance Network with their answers.
