The National League of Cities and the Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy invite Vermont municipal officials, staff, and volunteers to attend a listening session on Thursday, May 14 at 2:00 PM to share feedback about your community's experiences with preparing for the upcoming website accessibility compliance deadline. After successful advocacy efforts to secure an extension of the original deadline, communities with populations of less than 50,000 now have until April 26, 2028 to comply with the requirements of the Department of Justice's rule on accessibility standards for local government websites, apps, and other online content.

Feedback shared in this listening session will be used to inform advocacy to the Department of Justice around possible regulatory relief, guidance, and technical assistance needed for small communities. NLC welcomes feedback on the following topics and any other issues related to compliance you may wish to share:

  • How prepared do you feel your community is to meet the requirements of the rule by the new deadline?
  • What aspects of compliance do you find most challenging?
  • What clarifications do you need or questions do you have for the Department of Justice about compliance with the rule?
  • What costs are you incurring (one-time or ongoing) related to compliance?
  • Is your community worried about liability? If so, what do you think would help limit that liability?
  • What resources would be most helpful to assist your community with compliance?
