Applications are now open for the Building Communities Grants Program, administered by the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS). Three categories of grant are available:

  • Recreational Grants – for capital costs associated with the development and creation of community recreational opportunities in Vermont.
  • Regional Economic Development Grants – for capital costs associated with major maintenance, renovation, or planning related to the development of facilities reasonably expected to create or retain job opportunities in Vermont communities.
  • Human Services and Educational Grants – for capital costs associated with major maintenance, renovation, or development of facilities for the delivery of human services and health care or for the development of educational opportunities in Vermont communities. Past grant awards have included local and regional libraries, preschools, senior centers, community centers, and museums.

This is last gap funding for shovel-ready projects or projects that have begun construction. All permits must be in hand before submitting the grant application.

Grant awards are up to $25,000. All grants require $1 matching funds for each $1 grant funds awarded. Community-supported fundraising efforts are encouraged.

The application deadline is September 30, 2026. Grants will be awarded in October or November.
