current use advisory board

The Current Use Advisory Board, established in 32 V.S.A. § 3753, has two vacancies – a selectboard member and a lister/assessor – and the Governor's office is actively seeking interested applicants to serve in this critical role.

The purpose of the Current Use or Use Value Appraisal Program is to:

  1. encourage and assist the maintenance of Vermont's productive agricultural and forest land and prevent the accelerated conversion of these lands to more intensive use;
  2. achieve more equitable taxation for undeveloped lands;
  3. encourage and assist in the preservation and enhancement of Vermont's scenic natural resources; and
  4. enable the citizens of Vermont to plan its orderly growth in the face of increasing development pressures in the interests of the public health, safety and welfare.

The Current Use Advisory Board sets the Use Values for agricultural and forest land twice each year. Some off-season subcommittee work is possible.

Members are reimbursed for time and mileage to participate in the meetings, which take place during normal working hours.

Board membership must represent certain factions of Vermont taxpayers per 32 V.S.A. § 3753, hence the current requirements. To ensure a balance of representation, these members must not own enrolled land and have no spouse, child, or parent who owns enrolled land.

If you meet these requirements and are interested in serving on the board, you may apply here. Please also alert the Division of Property Valuation and Review of your interest by emailing Division Director Jill Remick at jill.remick@vermont.gov.
