PACIF Promotes Use of MONNIT Sensors to Reduce Property Claims

As part of PACIF’s ongoing desire to provide members with state-of-the-art solutions that support sound risk management, we have partnered with Monnit, a premier provider of internet-connected remote sensing systems, to make their sensors available to PACIF members at a reduced cost. In addition, PACIF will make Monnit sensors eligible for PACIF Grants.

Monnit sensors can measure temperature, humidity, motion, poisonous gases, processes at wastewater and utility facilities, and many more important data points. Implementing them can help improve safety, efficiency, and facility operations.

In July of 2021, after confirming that using the sensors poses no threat to municipal computer networks or data systems, PACIF launched a pilot program by deploying a variety of Monnit internet-connected sensors in ten PACIF member municipalities to evaluate the sensors’ potential value as a risk management tool. Approximately 55 sensors were placed

  • in facility basements or areas subject to water infiltration or leakage,
  • on mechanical motors, pumps, and turbines to detect vibration,
  • in limited occupancy locations and building “cold spots” to detect loss of heating, and
  • in building entrance/exit areas to detect motion.

The sensors worked very well. The participating municipalities experienced minimal battery, connectivity, or hardware issues. And for multiple members, the sensors triggered alerts of adverse conditions, which allowed the municipalities to take remedial steps and avert property damage claims. With the pilot project complete, at least 50% of the members who participated plan to continue using the sensors, and 20% say they plan to get more sensors to be able to monitor additional operations and facilities.

The success of the pilot program made it clear to the PACIF Loss Control team that the sensors are cost-effective risk management tools. They can be easily deployed and managed, and they have proven their ability to significantly reduce potential property damage claims.

In fact, to encourage all members to start using internet-connected sensing technology, PACIF has set up two incentives for members to take advantage of. Monnit is currently offering VLCT PACIF members 20% off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for sensors, 15% off MSRP for gateways, and 30% off on software renewals. In addition, Monnit sensors and gateways were accepted for the 2022 PACIF Grant Program and will be named as eligible items in the guidelines for 2023 grants.
