Basics for Delinquent Tax Collectors

Vermont’s property tax system is complicated and a frequently litigated field of Vermont municipal law. To help clarify things for you, this session begins with an overview of the role and responsibilities of the delinquent tax collector and the municipal property tax process, including when taxes become delinquent, issuance of the warrant, and calculating interest. This training will also address the legal requirements for notifying delinquent taxpayers, accepting payments, allocating partial payments, and record keeping. Additionally, we will briefly review the various property tax collection methods available under Vermont law.

This training is recommended for delinquent tax collectors, town managers, town administrators, constables, and selectboard members.

Attendees received a copy of our updated Handbook for Vermont Collectors of Delinquent Taxes, available exclusively in this bundle for a limited time. Please note, the version of the Handbook for Collectors of Delinquent Taxes (link below) includes one correction. Please use this version in place of the one distributed during the training.
